Biltmore Lake Sedimentation Mitigation

Asheville, NC

RDE was hired by the Lake Committee of the Biltmore Lake POA to identify causes of excessive sediment accumulation in a cove of Enka Lake, communicate findings, and develop design solutions. We identified 22 problem areas in the watershed that were contributing to sediment accumulation. RDE presented a range of solutions for each problem area type, as well as several design options for a sediment trap to catch sediment before it reaches the lake and provide a clean-out. The nature-based design solutions include low-tech stream restoration, bioretention areas, bioswales, and a floodplain activation area. RDE’s data and recommendations combined with the Lake Committee’s values and priorities drove the selection of design solutions that make up the pilot project.
